Official BlackBerry Twitter App Finally Leaves Beta, E-Reader Prices Keep Dropping

blackberry twitter app

Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....

  • The absence of a legitimate RIM Twitter app has allowed services like Uber Twitter, Tweetcaster and Open Beak to enjoy great success among BlackBerry owners. After three months of waiting, RIM's official BlackBerry Twitter offering finally seems ready to exit the Beta stage, as an official version just appeared in BlackBerry's App World. [From: Engadget]
  • Time magazine has been incrementally shifting toward an online paid subscription model for over a year. It appears the site is now officially implementing that system, but only for material specifically published in its print edition. Online readers frequently demonstrate their disdain for firewalls, registration processes and fees, but Time could circumvent that trend by keeping its strictly online material free to the public. [From: All Things Digital]
  • The highly competitive e-reader war continues to escalate, and consumers keep reaping the benefits. Borders will soon provide an assortment of highly affordable models, and the company is also launching its own eBook store today, reportedly with 1.5 million titles. PC and Mac apps are both currently available, and Android and BlackBerry versions should arrive soon. [From: Engadget]
  • Sony has responded to the expanding catalogs and dwindling prices of competing e-readers by dropping the costs of its own various tablet devices. The price cuts range from $20 (for the now $149 Pocket Edition Reader) to $80 (for the $169 Touch Edition Reader). [From: Reuters]
  • Woot's assertion that the AP needs to adhere to its own supposed standards by paying for recently referenced material has seriously rankled the Columbia Journalism Review. The CJR lambasted Woot, and particularly Tech Crunch, for perpetuating a "zombie lie," and then condescendingly dropped patronizing terms and phrases likes "dumb," "cheap," "embarrassing," "BS," and "let me put this as clearly as I can." Wow, the view must be pretty sweet from that virginal, ivory tower of elitist nerddom. [From: The Columbia Journalism Review]
  • A month ago, the U.S. military detained soldier Bradley Manning for his alleged role in leaking classified material to Wikileaks. Authorities have now charged Manning with a variety of crimes, including violations of both the Uniform Code of Military Justice and the Espionage Act. According to CNET, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange claims his site "will defend" Manning, who has also inspired a website in his defense. [From: CNET]

Relativity Media Adding Premium Content to Netflix, Daily Deals Landing on Twitter

netflix and relativity media logos

Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....

  • Netflix has already bolstered its streaming catalog with the premium network Starz Play service, and a new deal with Relativity Media, which should continue to pressure movie channels like HBO and Showtime, now gives Netflix broadcasting rights to a growing library of recently released content. The first Relativity titles to appear will reportedly include 'Season of the Witch' with Nicolas Cage and 'The Fighter' with Christian Bale. [From: Paid Content and Engadget]
  • Twitter's recent additions of an @anywhere feature and a "promoted tweets" scheme both generate needed revenue for the site. A new "Early Bird" daily deal should help build on that successful pattern, but if you want to find out specific information, Twitter PR has reportedly stated, "Keep waking up early, and you might be the first to find out what they are." [From: Business Insider]
  • The robot and acronym wizards at DARPA, who previously unleashed the GUARD-DOG (Analysis for Rapid Detection - Deployed on the Ground) and RATS (Robust Automatic Transcription of Speech), are appealing to both biologists and comic nerds with two new creations. The group's BaTMAN (Biochronicity and Temporal Mechanisms Arising in Nature) will study "the spatio-temporal universe," while its RoBIN (Robustness of Biologically Inspired Networks) will investigate human behavior and "biological design principles." [From: Wired]
  • Foursquare's recent privacy debacle certainly hasn't tempered user enthusiasm, as the site experienced its first "million-check in" day last Friday. Then it promptly happened again on Saturday. For Foursquare to host 1 million user check-ins during a single day, an average of 11.58 must occur every second. [From: Geekosystem]
  • The witty and wily Woot crew increasingly cements itself as one of the Web's most admirable and hilarious group of merry pranksters. After the Associated Press apparently lifted comments pertaining to Woot's recent Amazon deal from the Woot blog, the online retailer required the AP to adhere to its own quotation-payment plan. Woot is charging those staid old scriveners $17.50 for the used material, but is also willing to waive that debt if the AP produces an "email receipt from today's two pack of Sennheiser MX400 In-Ear headphones." [From: Tech Crunch]
  • Despite a recent admission of MySpace failure from chief Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. is reportedly soliciting major corporations for advertising help. A current deal with Google ends in August, and News Corp. hopes someone, specifically Google, Microsoft or Yahoo!, can help to fill the void. [From: Reuters]

CrunchDeals: $79 Samsung Blu-ray player with Netflix

Blu-ray won the format war. I was wrong and Ben was right. Oh well. At least Blu-ray players are finally dropping down in price. Today’s Woot is a $79 Sammy model that’s capable of streaming Netflix. Yeah, it’s a refurb, but the price is right.

Similiarly speced out models retail for nearly double this price. This model not only does Netflix, but it also can stream Blockbuster, Pandora, and YouTube. Not too shabby for $79 plus $5 shipping, eh?

That TiVo Series 3 on Woot isn’t a bad deal

The TiVo Premiere will be here real soon so it isn’t much of a surprise to see a Series 3 on Woot. You might want to consider it, too. The Series 3 might be old, but it’s still a great DVR. It even has a few advantages over the TiVoHD line and upcoming Series4.

The big downside to the deal is that this Woot model only comes with a 250GB hard drive. But it’s also the only TiVo model features an open eSATA port that doesn’t require a special TiVo-approved drive or hacking. You can plug any ol’ eSATA hard drive into this model to instantly add storage. Note: eSATA RAID enclosures do not work as it’s not a eSATA port multiplier.

The Series 3 also ships with the fancy backlit remote and sports a nice OLED screen on the front panel. You’ll still need to pay for the TiVo service charge and two CableCARDS as this model doesn’t support the multistream M-Cards.

Keep in mind though, that while the Series 3 can still stream movies from Netflix, BlockBuster, Amazon, YouTube, and other random video podcasts, it will not get the fancy new menu system found on the Premiere. Sorry. TiVo doesn’t love you that much.
