Seven45 Studios SixString guitar gaming controller

Seven45 Studios SixString guitar gaming controller

Seven45 Studios unveiled their amazing looking SixString guitar controller for the gaming showpiece known as Power Gig: Rise of the SixString, where it is an actual electric guitar that can be plugged into an amp. Both the game and guitar will be sold together, where folks with more experienced fingers will be able to benefit from the action of chording, as this is a whole lot more challenging since it requires specific finger placement on the strings. Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms will sport this game, and while pricing details have not been fleshed out for its fall release, we do know it will cost a fair bit considering the type of hardware it comes with.

PowerHouse eMonitor lets you manage power use down to the circuit

As energy prices increase, so does our desire to understand and actively manage household power use. Joining the fight alongside Google's PowerMeter and NEC's "dung beetle" game, PowerHouse Dynamic's eMonitor interfaces with your circuit box to tell you how much energy each individual circuit is using, and the management software seems particularly robust: users can look forward to real-time stats, customized energy saving recommendations based on your home's energy usage, and a handy read-out of your "carbon footprint" and what it would take to offset it. In addition to all that, alerts can be configured for everything from overloaded circuits to left-on appliances, individual outlets and thermostats can be controlled remotely (optional), and an iPhone app is slated to be released later this year. Packages start at $800. PR, video after the break.

Professor X Chair Dispenses Vodka, Announces Presence with Arduino Sounds and Smoke [Wheelchairs]

This fully-functional wheelchair comes complete with, well, everything I could possibly think of that's necessary for something to be called a Steampunk Professor X chair. Vodka cranberry dispenser? Yes. Booming Arduino/Adafruit sound effects? Sure! Working smokestack? Why, yes!

Better still, there's video of the creator tooling around a model railroad museum, confusing and fascinating bystanders with his booze-dealing contraption of wonder. And yes, builder Daniel Valdez looks like Professor X:

Says Valdez on some of the specifics:

What you get when you mix an 1875 Eastlake Victorian platform rocking chair with a Permobil C300 Power wheelchair and a few trips to an antique store. Toss in screaming digital amped sound system, an event triggered sound processor, oh and a portable smoke machine!

Indeed. As for my thoughts on the chair, I'm just half-glad something called "steampunk" actually does...something, for once. [Flickr via Adafruit - Thanks, Philip]

Sanyo Eneloop bicycle range expands

Sanyo Eneloop bicycle range expands

The Eneloop brand from Sanyo is not limited to just one of the best rechargeable batteries in the market, it also encompasses bicycles with a couple of models hitting the deck this time round - the CY-SPL226 and CY-SPL224 which boast a next-generation riding mode-Eco Charge Mode. This new Eco Charge Mode features regenerative charging control that enables the rider to actively charge the battery while going up and about on flat roads, paving the way for a new style of energy-creating models. Regenerative charging is rendered effortless when riding, and you will remain comfortable at your own pace. Theoretically, cycling 1km in Eco Charge Mode over flat ground is able to generate enough electricity to travel about 300m in Power Mode. Expect to fork out around $1,800 for the new Sanyo Electric Hybrid Bicycle as it hits the Japanese market this April 21st.

Bioluminescent Lamp Glows With the Power of Genetically-Altered Hamster Cells [Horror]

Who needs a lamp to be classy when it can be fucking horrifying? That's what the "Half Life" lamp is, because it glows thanks to living hamster cells that have been enriched with firefly genes. Holy shit.

The lamp, created by Joris Laarman, was created without harming any hamsters, apparently. Instead, it was created using a culture of tissue kept alive since 1957. Oh, that's much less creepy, thanks so much, Joris!

Want to see this horrifying specimen in person? It'll be on display at the Friedman Benda Gallery in NYC starting tomorrow. [Metropolis via Inhabitat]

Sun Power Technology mini-notebook

Sun Power Technology mini-notebook

Just when you thought that netbooks and Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) were the smallest category mobile computing machines out there, along comes Sun Power Technology with their, well, device which falls under no man's land. After all, it comes with a 4.8" touchscreen display at 800 x 480 resolution, a QWERTY keyboard, 512MB RAM, flash memory, Wi-Fi connectivity and a battery life which is good for up to 2 hours. Tipping the scales at 1.8 pounds, the QWERTY keyboard looks rather redundant since it isn't large enough for comfortable touch typing, but is more suited for a pair of thumbs. What is this, a thigh book?

Ribbon Hero for Microsoft Office

Tired of Guitar Hero, and DJ Hero, and Rock Band Hero, and Flailing Wildly Hero games for your console? Ready to try a fresh new challenge, that might actually provide some real world skills, unlike frantically mashing colored buttons? Try your hand at Ribbon Hero for Microsoft Office!

“Ribbon Hero is a game for Word, PowerPoint, and Excel 2007 and 2010, designed to help you boost your Office skills and knowledge. Play games (aka “challenges”), score points, and compete with your friends while improving your productivity with Office.” Just what you’ve been waiting for!!

The history behind Ribbon Hero is actually pretty interesting.

Ribbon Hero, in part, was born from a speech I gave back in October 2007 on applying the design lessons of Super Mario Bros. to application design. I made the following bet:

  • If an activity can be learned…
  • If the player’s performance can be measured…
  • If the player can be rewarded or punished in a timely fashion…
  • Then any activity that meets these criteria can be turned into a game.

Not only can you make a game out of the activity, but you can turn tasks traditionally seen as a rote or frustrating into compelling experiences that users find delightful.

Via Mark Pilgrim.

New Potato’s FLPR IR dongle gives your iPhone home automation capabilities

It's hard to say why we've seen a glut of these adapters hit all within the same week, but hey, the more the merrier! North Carolina's own New Potato Technologies (yes, we're serious) has followed up on ThinkFlood and Power A's efforts by introducing an Infrared iPhone / iPod touch dongle of its own. The difference? This one connects to the dock connector, and when used with the accompanying app, it can control lights, stereo systems, home cinemas and pretty much anything that allows dictation via IR. The best part just might be said app, as it allows users to search a database of over 14,000 device codes and just add the products they already own, which means that you'll probably only be stuck programming that LaserDisc player you refuse to give up. It'll start shipping today from the company's own website for $79.99, or you can consult the middleman (read: Best Buy) on starting on March 28th.
