Toshiba Folio 100 debuts at IFA 2010

The Toshiba Folio 100 tablet has just been announced at IFA 2010 in Berlin, and it has been confirmed to come with a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen display at 1024 x 600 resolution, an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core chipset with Android 2.1 as the operating system of choice instead of Android 2.2 as we reported earlier. The 1.3-megapixel camera as well as 16GB of internal memory are accurate though. Other specifications of the Folio 100 include 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity, an HDMI output, a couple of built-in speakers and a microphone for communication purposes, a USB port and an SD memory card reader. The battery is touted to run for up to 7 hours before requiring a quick recharge, while its default browser is Opera Mobile with the ability to handle Adobe Flash. You will get preloaded software in the Folio 100 to help you get started right out of the box, but the two most important details - pricing and availability, are still as elusive as Osama bin Laden.

Toshiba Folio 100 goes official, lands in Q4

If Samsung's Galaxy Tab reads like a how-to for making a decent Android tablet, Toshiba's Folio 100 seems to serve an opposite purpose (starting with that unfortunate name), which is disappointing for a company like Toshiba. The tablet just got official here at IFA, after being spotted on the show floor earlier today, but there's nothing in the press release to change our initial impressions of the device. There's a 1024 x 600 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen, Tegra 2 under the hood, 16GB of built-in storage, SD card expansion, HDMI out, 802.11n WiFi, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, and Android 2.2 with Flash 10.1 running on top of it all. Toshiba claims 7 hours of battery of "regular" use (65% web browsing, 10% video playback, 25% standby), and everything is packed into a 0.55-inch thick form factor that weighs 1.7 pounds. Software-wise Toshiba has baked in Opera, Toshiba Media Player, FBReader, Fring (for video calls), Documents To Go, and Evernote, with Toshiba offering its own app marketplace and developer platform for tablet-specific apps. Unfortunately, the tablet ends up in person as less than the sum of its parts, and while Toshiba might be able to redeem itself slightly with perhaps a surprisingly low pricepoint, we don't imagine ourselves yearning for this device to escape the bonds of its initial Europe, Middle East, and Africa launch markets. PR is after the break.

Update: Toshiba just said that the suggested retail price will be €399.

SkyFire Browser Submitted To The App Store

SkyFire Browser Submitted To The App Store

The folks over at Opera had quite a tough time getting Opera Mini approved for Apple's iOS, but they finally managed to get approval. With that in mind, we're interested to see if SkyFire will encounter similar resistance, not to mention that SkyFire will indirectly support a good amount of the Flash video that's available on the web. It's worth noting that SkyFire doesn't actually play Flash content on iOS, rather it uses a proxy to remotely convert Flash video into something that iOS supports, embedding said video content back for playback at the user's request. That being said, this method means that while Flash video can be viewed, but Flash content such as games will not work. Apparently SkyFire are pretty confident that the browser will be approved quickly as it was developed with significant oversight and feedback from Apple, claiming to adhere to every guideline put forth by Apple regarding HTML5 video playback for iOS. Will the possibility of another browser for iOS be an interesting idea to you?

Opera Mini serves up on billion page views daily

Opera Mini serves up on billion page views daily

Just how popular is the Opera Mini mobile browser? How about the fact that it serves up a delicious one billion page views daily? This Java ME-based mobile browser is definitely heading in the right direction despite pretty decent browsers being bundled together with the iPhone and Android-powered handsets to date. This mobile browser's main distinguishing feature would be its compression technology that is smart enough to compress web page content up to 90% on Opera’s servers before sending them to the actual device, which will go a long way in helping you save time and bandwidth.
