Verizon To Push Android 2.2 Droid Update Next Week

Those on the original Motorola Droid will not have much longer to wait as the nation's largest carrier has sent a note to media stating that an Android 2.2 Froyo update will get pushed out to that device beginning next week. Updates can be performed over the air and comes hot on the heels of Sprint's announcement that the EVO 4G will get its Froyo update starting on August 3.

Motorola Sage: AT&T’s next Android phone?
We tend to go into full-on conjecture mode when we see an interesting FCC filing, but our instincts haven't let us down in the past, so allow us to throw something out on the table. A new Motorola just hit the feds with 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 2Mbps HSUPA on the 850 and 1900MHz bands, quadband EDGE, WiFi, Bluetooth, AGPS, and a digital compass. In other words, this is definitely an Android set, and it could definitely work on AT&T. The Backflip's already looking plenty long in the tooth, and we wouldn't be surprised to see Moto fire its second Google-powered volley on AT&T before too long -- it's certainly been doing its duties on Verizon (and to a lesser extent, T-Mobile) after all. Any thoughts on what wild form factor this one might be?

Motorola Droid getting Android 2.2 next week
We've just been dropped a brief note from Verizon that the original Droid will be getting the full Froyo treatment at some point next week. Considering the brevity of the announcement, it's entirely possible that this was thrown together in response to Sprint's EVO news -- but who cares? The more Android 2.2, the better, right? No official word on other Droid variants -- most of which are likely going to see Froyo updates soon -- but we'll be keeping our ears firmly planted to the ground.

Motorola’s Sales Jump 600% Since Last Year [Motorola]
Selling 8.3 million mobile phones, 2.7 of which were smart phones, provided Motorola with earnings of $162 million this quarter, compared to $26 million this time last year. Motorola's success is largely due to the Droid, which was dropped late last year and leads the market in Android phone sales. [TG Daily] More
Droid 2 manual leaks, teaches you everything you need to know about a phone you don’t have
You know the drill: blurry shots of phone get leaked... user's manual gets leaked... excited would-be buyers voraciously consume manual's contents... phone finally gets released. Indeed, that's precisely the same well-trodden path the upcoming Droid 2 is taking, so if you're looking at getting this thing in the next few weeks, you might want to start skimming the documentation so there aren't any embarrassing newbie missteps in your first few moments of ownership. As Droid Life notes, we've got more confirmation here that the phone will be running the same skin as the Droid X, complete with the Swype-enabled (and presumably multitouch-enabled) soft keyboard for those times when you're too lazy to pull out the physical keyboard. We can't imagine what else could possibly leak at this point -- so hey, Verizon, can we recommend you go ahead and get this show on the road?

Motorola manages $162 million Q2 profit, turns that frown upside down
It's a good day here, because rather than poor 'ol Sad Moto we get to bust out Happy Moto, as Motorola has released some good news in its Q2 financial report. Earnings were $162 million, up from $26 million this time last year. That sounds like a big jump, but compared to overall sales of $5.4 billion you can see things are still rather tight -- especially since those sales were down from $5.5 billion the year before and all-important mobile device sales figures dropped six percent to $1.7 billion. Also, these numbers were boosted by a "significant legal settlement" valued at $228 million. Maybe intellectual property wasn't the only thing Moto got from RIM?

Droid X Running Android 2.2 Appears On eBay

Google’s anticipated Android 2.2 mobile OS seems to be turning up everywhere nowadays, and when someone purchased the Motorola Droid X off eBay, the device surprisingly came preinstalled with Android 2.2 FroYo. Apparently the firmware installed is just a test build, and isn’t the final product, but it’s still nice to know that the firmware is busy being installed on Droid X devices around, and we’re looking forward to seeing it officially offered for the Droid X, hopefully sooner rather than later.
