Fox Soccer Channel, GolTV Go HD In August On DirecTV
Finally. That’s literally the only word you can use in response to the following sentence: DirecTV will carry Fox Soccer Channel in HD beginning on August 11. Well, according to EPL Talk’s well-placed sources at the network. And yes, that’s just in time for the new Premier League and Serie A seasons. Thank you thank you thank you!
It’s about time, too, considering FSC HD first launched (initially on Dish Network) some six months ago. Since then, DirecTV subscribers have had to stare at those two letter—HD—in the corner bug, all the while muttering, “But it’s not HD…”
Fox Soccer Plus should go HD in the “near future.”
Meanwhile, the other great soccer network in the United States, GolTV, will go HD this summer. DirecTV, also according to EPL Talk, will carry the HD channel perhaps as early as August 4—next Wednesday, in other words.
While FSC is known for its coverage of the English Premier League and Italy’s Serie A, GolTV carries the torch for Spain’s La Liga, Germany’s Bundesliga, and various South American competitions. (ESPN shares the North American rights for La Liga.)
All of this means that DirecTV subscribers will get to see the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Schalke 04 (Raúl’s new home, of course) in glorious HD.
Considering I bought my first HDTV just in time for the 2006 World Cup, well, it’s about time!

Nokia N8 up for official €469 pre-order in Italy, available in September
Nokia's Symbian^3 flagship -- the 3.5-inch N8 with 12 megapixel camera -- just went up for pre-order on Espoo's Italian storefront showing an end of September availabilty. Now before you get up in arms about the €469 price tag (about $610), remember, the €370 estimated retail price announced was pre tax and pre carrier subsidy. That's just how Europe does things, deal with it. We're not seeing the preorder available elsewhere but we'll update you if that situation changes.
[Thanks, Faisal]

iPhone 4 To Arrive In 17 More Countries This Friday

Amidst all the bad news surrounding the iPhone 4 and its antennagate issue, there is some good news, as Apple has announced that the iPhone 4 will be launching in 17 more countries this Friday, which will include: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. Surprisingly, the list of countries doesn't include South Korea, which was previously slated to receive the phone about the same time, though an explanation wasn't provided for the country's omission. Local pricing for the iPhone 4 will be announced at a later date. In the meantime, you can check out our in-depth iPhone 4 review to help you decide whether you should get it when it's launched in your country.

Driverless vehicles begin trek from Italy to China

You probably remember DARPA’s Grand Challenge, which required autonomous vehicles to navigate from one point to another without human intervention. That’s probably the most well-known example of this kind of research (hundreds of entries and millions of dollars went into it), but just because it’s not going on any more doesn’t mean that research has stopped. One project, based in Italy, is looking into the possibility not of cars that simply drive themselves, but cars that follow one another yet can react to unfamiliar “stimuli.” Think of a caravan of robots with a human at the front.
The project has been in the lab and driving around locally for some time now, but they think it’s time to take it to the next level. The project lead, Alberto Broggi, said:
What we are trying to do is stress our systems and see if they can work in a real environment, with real weather, real traffic and crazy people who cross the road in front of you and a vehicle that cuts you off.
He puts driverless vehicles at about 20 years off, which seems like a long time to me. But 10 years is way too soon. I’m going with 15.
The project will be two pairs of vans, with the robo-vans following the driven vans — which will be carrying technicians in case the robo-vans break down. Since they’ll be driving on populated roads and the chances of error and danger are pretty high, there will be a driver in each robo-van as well, waiting to take over at the push of a button. They intend to drive all the way from Parma, Italy, to China — at between 30 and 37MPH, which is about as fast as the vans can go.
Sounds pretty cool to me (and a bit like a Top Gear episode), but it probably will get pretty boring being the backup guy during the long stretches.

Now Google Can Spy on You at an Angle: 45-Degree View Released

Google has now announced that you can use its services to get a sideways view of the world. A few months back, Google released its 45-degree aerial photographs to developers, and has since incorporated the perspective into its beta testing ground, Google Maps Labs. Now the images are available for all users, but they only cover a handful of areas: some parts of California; South Africa; Venice, Italy; and Dortmund, Germany. Hooray for the Google panopticon!
What does this mean for your weekend? Why, absolutely nothing. In fact, we can't really see what's different from when Google Maps merged its data with Google Earth. We guess the pictures are a little higher-res? Even more reason to cover up your naked child. [From: ReadWriteWeb]

RoboCup Soccer Finalists Flop Even More Than Their World Cup Counterparts [Soccer]
In the recent finals of the world's most prestigious tiny robot soccer tournament, the Darmstadt Dribblers housed the FUmanoids 7-1. Here's the (mercifully) sped-up video of the match, complete with theatrics I haven't seen since I last watched Italy play. More
