Obama Says Presidential BlackBerry Is ‘No Fun,’ But His iPod’s Stocked With Jay-Z

Obama and Hist BlackBerry

It's a well known fact that President Obama has a bit of a BlackBerry addiction -- so much so, the man fought long and hard to keep his beloved device once he entered the White House, making him the first sitting president to use one of the e-mail centric smartphones. But Obama revealed on 'The View' Thursday that, perhaps, it wasn't worth all the trouble. Though White House security and IT personnel eventually succumbed to the president's desires, only a select few are authorized to contact him on the device. A grand total of ten individuals know the President's BlackBerry info. As he told the coven round table on 'The View,' it's "no fun" because people refrain from sending him the "real juicy stuff" in order to avoid being archived under the Presidential Records Act.

There are some other tantalizing tech bits. "Some 20-year-old" person tweets for the presidential Twitter account. And, while he hasn't "made the switch" to an iPhone, he does have a fully loaded iPod upon which he's dependent. His music choices? "You name a song, I've got it," the President explains, mentioning Jay-Z, Frank Sinatra and Maria Callas -- but definitely not Justin Bieber. [From: AFP, via: Engadget]

Kindle App for Your iPhone and iPad Gets Dictionary, Search

new kindle dictionaryEarlier this week, we reported that Amazon was upping its game with even cheaper versions of the Kindle, but it has also updated the Kindle app on the iPad/iPhone/iPod touch, adding a couple of unremarkable yet needed features.

The Kindle app now has a search function, which was inexplicably absent before. It's also able to look up words and phrases through Wikipedia and Google, but not within the app itself. (It just moves into Safari, but with fast-app-switching celerity.) We very much enjoy the included 250,000-word dictionary, which takes a minute to download, and runs within the software, so that readers don't have to lose their places. That's great news for us, since we still have not grown accustomed to the Kindle app's bizarre line/page numbering system. [From: iTunes, via: Wired]

Yosion Apple Peel 520 Turns Your iPod Touch Into An iPhone

While the iPod touch wasn't designed to make cellular phone calls, it would be pretty cool if you could turn it into an iPhone. The folks over at Yosion seem to think that they can, with a product cheekily dubbed Apple Peel 520. It's powered by an Infineon baseband chip, and offers voice calling and text messaging services by allowing you to fit a regular SIM card into it, though you'll probably need to jailbreak the iPhone in order to get the necessary applications in. Aside from granting the device cellular connectivity, the device also doubles up as an 800mAh battery that gives the iPhone an additional 4.5 hours of talk time, or 120 hours of standby time. Word is that the Apple Peel 520 will be available sometime this week from $44 to $74, though some folks who remain skeptical about its authenticity as there isn't an official website or compatibility list released just yet. Check a video of this device in action after the jump.

Blackbox i10 noise cancelling earbuds tap into iPod / iPhone dock connector for power, pleasure

Oh, sure -- you've got at least 893.1 options (at last count, anyway) when it comes to noise cancelling headphones for your iDevice, but do any of those plug directly into the dock connector instead of requiring a separate battery? Exactly. That's the claim to fame for Blackbox's i10, a new set of earbuds that rely on power from your iPod or iPhone in order to achieve that active noise cancelling action that the youngsters are so crazy about these days. According to the company, these will filter out 92 percent of background noise using Phitek Systems' ANR technology, and the inline remote makes it easy to adjust volume and the like. They're available today for

AmpliTube for iPad available, Yngwie Malmsteen en route to Apple Store

Just a quick note for all of you virtual amping enthusiasts: IK Multimedia has announced that the AmpliTube is now available for iPad. As you'd expect, it works with your iRig hardware and the UI seems benefit from the extra screen real estate (let's be honest -- twiddling all those knobs and stomp boxes on the iPod Touch was a little bit much for us to take). It comes in two flavors: free (three effects, one amp, one cab, two mics) or $20 (11 effects, five amps and cabs, two mics). Either way it's cheaper than spending $350 for the OS X version. PR after the break.

Teen Barters Old Cell Phone on Craigslist to Eventually Land a Porsche

steven ortiz with his porsche

Steven Ortiz, like most high schoolers, used to rock an ancient cell phone. But, in the span of just two years, the teenager magically turned his raggedy old burner into a sleek Porsche Boxster S... with, of course, a little help from Craigslist.

As the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports, Ortiz began scouring through Craigslist's barter section when he was just 15, looking for anyone willing to take his phone in exchange for something else. He finally traded his old mobile for a better one, then traded that phone for an iPod Touch. He bartered the iPod for a dirt bike, and eventually obtained a whole fleet of cars. Among the vehicles that passed through Ortiz's garage was a 1975 Ford Bronco, which is reportedly something of a collector's item. Two years after beginning his barter bonanza, the 17-year-old became the proud owner of a 2000 Porsche Boxster S. The sports car, in fact, was actually worth $9,000 -- about $6,000 less than Ortiz' Bronco. But we're pretty sure that being able to wheel that thing around his high school parking lot far exceeds any monetary loss.

Apple posts record $3.25b profit in first full quarter of iPad sales, says more ‘amazing products’ coming this year

http://www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/applestorebeijing2-01252010.jpg

Apple just posted up its third quarter earnings -- its first full quarter selling the iPad -- and, well, it's raining cash in Cupertino. The company posted a record profit of $3.35b on record revenues of $15.7b, which is up from $1.83b and $9.73b from a year ago. The big stat? Apple sold 3.27 million iPads, nearly matching the 3.47 million Macs sold -- and Mac sales were up 33 percent from a year ago to set a new quarterly record. Yeah, damn. iPhone sales -- including the first few weeks of the iPhone 4 -- were up 61 percent from a year ago to 8.4 million, and the iPod continued its slow decline, down eight percent to 9.41 million units sold. Over half of the Apple's sales -- 52 percent -- were international, and Jobs is quoted saying "we have amazing new products still to come this year." Not a bad way to head into back-to-school and the holidays, we suppose -- we've got a feeling those iPad numbers are just going to go up. The conference call to discuss all this is at 5pm ET, we'll be covering it live right here.
