Samsung SCH-R900 approved by FCC: first US LTE phone is go
We first caught wind of the SCH-R900 after MetroPCS announced that it would be first to carry the Samsung handset when its fledgling LTE network lights up in select markets sometime after the summer. Now the FCC has been kind enough to bless a preproduction R900 with its approval. Not much is known about the dual-mode CDMA / LTE device other than what we can glean off the broad-shouldered image above and certifications for Bluetooth, 802.11b/g WiFi, dual-band 1700 / 1900 LTE and EvDO data. The future: it's what's for breakfast.

Nintendo issues a 3DS release date date
Find the headline confusing? Well, the explanation won't help to assuage the muddle much. A Nintendo spokesman told Bloomberg Japan that Ninty plans to announce the Nintendo 3DS price and release date on September 29th. Thus far, we've only seen speculation about pricing (between $249 and $299) and release dates (between October and March, 2011). So yeah, we still don't know when or for how much but at least we know when we'll find out when and for how much. Make sense?

UK bans R4 cards, makes Nintendo DS pirating ‘double illegal’
While us Yankees are celebrating the one small victory for all that's right and good represented by the recent DMCA jailbreak exception, things are looking a little bleaker for UK gadget-heads this afternoon. London's High Court has ruled that R4 cards, which are used by homebrewers and the occasional no-goodnik game pirate to circumvent security on the Nintendo DS, cannot be sold, advertised, or imported into the UK. According to Joystiq, Nintendo claims they've seized over 100,000 R4 devices in the country since 2009. When asked for a comment, the Queen was all like, "What?"UK bans R4 cards, makes Nintendo DS pirating 'double illegal' originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 28 Jul 2010 14:47:00 EDT. Video: Prepare to get nailed. Period.
This guy, Fred Merle got arrested for selling Polka DVDs that he did not own the rights to. Apparently he was set up to make a deal with a tall guy dressed as a polka-fiend and now he can’t sell Polka DVDs anymore. Like forever. There is the wife, the lawyer and the tall guy with the mustache. Click to see the videos

Apple Magic Trackpad official, shipping now for $69
It's not like Apple could very well keep it a secret anymore, so today we're being treated to the official unveiling of the Magic Trackpad. This wireless touch input receptacle -- already thoroughly leaked, trademarked, and FCC-approved -- has just made its debut, of all places, in Apple's Store app for iOS 4.

The “Popcorn Hand” lets you eat popcorn, protects your fingers from getting greasy (video)
Do you remember the “Potato Chip Hand” we’ve shown you earlier this year? The silly gadget allowed users to pick up potato chips and protected fingers from getting greasy when eating potato chip. And now maker Takara Tomy is giving us the “Popcorn Hand”, which does the same – but for popcorn.
Just use the slider on the Popcorn Hand to grab the popcorn and move it to your mouth. Much like with the Potato Chip Hand, this hand’s fingers are placed so that they don’t touch the table when you put it away (for hygienic reasons).
Takara Tomy plans to start selling the Popcorn Hand in three colors (see below) in October (Japanese street price: $8). Ask Japan- and US-based import/export specialist Rinkya if you’re interested but live outside Japan.
Here’s a video I grabbed off YouTube (shot by CScout Japan):

Kin listed as at least $240 million writeoff in Microsoft earnings report
Here's a tidbit in today's Microsoft quarterly earnings that we previously overlooked: a $240 million cost of revenue "primarily... resulting from the discontinuation of the Kin phone, offset in part by decreased Xbox 360 console costs." In other words, the company took at least a quarter billion hit due to manufacturing, distribution, and support costs of the Kin (according to Microsoft's definition of "cost of revenue"). We don't know how much Xbox 360 offset, unfortunately, but we can add this figure to the $500 million Danger acquisition and the full marketing cost for the product (which we also don't know, but anecdotally, it was on par with other major campaigns) to reach... well, at least $800 million in regret for the folks in Redmond.

Kin of the Living Dead: Microsoft updates the Kin

The Kin One and Kin Two are about as dead as can be. 22 days after they hit the shelves, Microsoft stopped making them, and Verizon stopped selling them. All in all, it’s said that about 10,000 of these things managed to get into people’s pockets before the axe got dropped — but if you’re one of those 10,000: Surprise! You’ve got a software update waiting for you.
