‘OnLive’ Video Game Service to Start Streaming this Summer

Gamers have been waiting for OnLive, a cloud-based video game streaming service, to launch since last year. Good news: the wait will soon be over. According to Joystiq, CEO Steve Perlman announced that a final version of OnLive will debut at E3 2010, and the service will become available to gamers in the 48 continental states on June 17th, 2010. For $14.95-a-month, you can stream video games directly to your PC or Mac using a browser plug-in, but there are plans to release a television adapter later this year. You'll have to pay extra to rent or purchase a game -- which we imagine would involve a physical disc or an actual download -- but the company hasn't announced a price for those yet though.

If you're one of the first 25,000 folks to visit the OnLive site and subscribe, the first three months won't cost a dime. That's incentive enough, but OnLive is also packing a decent arsenal of games, too. To start, you can play games like 'Mass Effect 2,' 'Borderlands,' and a few others. Of course, we're sure the library will grow over time.

The Pokemon return: HeartGold and SoulSilver

So I got a random delivery today, and I was quite surprised to see it was from Nintendo. Even more surprising was when I opened the box and saw they had sent me the two latest Pokemon games, HeartGold and SoulSilver. What was even more interesting was when I started to read the enclosed literature that explained exactly what’s new about these two games.

One of the criticisms leveled at video games is that they encourage children to sit on the couch instead of going outside. Nintendo has of course bucked this trend with the Wii Fit and other games that have been coming out recently that encourage getting up and moving around. Imagine my surprise when I saw that HeartGold and SoulSilver include something called a “Pokewalker”.

What is a Pokewalker? Well, apparently you can download your favorite Pokemon into a small pedometer that you clip to your clothing, and then you take your Pokemon for a walk. Walking your Pokemon will increase it’s happiness, help it to gain experience points, and even help you to catch other species of Pokemon. Kids (and let’s be honest, adults too) can connect two Pokewalkers to gain special gifts. I love it!

Gameplay is the same as the other Pokemon games, but feels closest to the most recent release, Pokemon Diamond. This is actually a great thing, since Pokemon Diamond is considered to be one of the best games of the franchise. I haven’t had a chance to try the Pokewalker yet, but I’ll update this story after I reach the level where I can use it.

OnLive Game Service to launch on June 17 in the US for $15 a month

It's been a long time coming, but it looks like the wait for OnLive is finally coming to an end: the service is now officially slated to launch on June 17 in the 48 contiguous states. The game streaming service will run users $14.95 a month, though buying or renting games is an additional cost (it's unclear exactly what that cost might be). Luckily there will be lower prices available for multi-month buys, and the first 25,000 people to sign up will get their first three months free. Service includes free instant-play demos, multiplayer and an "instant video-based social network," whatever that means. At the outset the service will run on Mac and PC as a browser plugin, but the MicroConsole TV adapter will be released later this year, with other devices to be added "over time." Initially the service will run at 720p, but 1080p / 60 fps will be added once the bandwidth becomes available. Out of the gate there will be somewhere between 12 and 25 titles available, including Mass Effect 2, Borderlands, Assassin's Creed II, Dragon Age Origins, and Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. There are five different data centers set up to serve up the games, strategically placed to reduce lag... let's hope they work!

German Couple Creates a ‘Super Mario’ Room

Creative geek couples frequently celebrate their nerd-love through incredibly dorky methods. From 8-bit wedding invitations to 'Super Mario' proposals, video game aficionados love to honor their unions of nerdity through festive and colorful tributes.

Although we Switched folk are still partial to this incredible and intensive labor of love (which was bestowed upon one of our own), a couple in Germany is providing some serious competition in the arena of romance. Neatorama fan Dennis, and his mechanical engineer girlfriend Judith, have designed and crafted an awe-inspiring 'Super Mario' room. The unique, homemade decorations include question-mark prize boxes, appropriate wall paintings, and a trash can turned warp pipe.

The room and the furnishings are definitely awesome, but, seriously though, no overalls? C'mon, Dennis and Judith -- that puffy shirt is just too ridiculously dorky (the rest of the room notwithstanding). [From: Neatorama]
