Teen Hauled to Jail For Overdue Library DVD [Crime]

What started as a routine traffic stop ended with a Colorado teen doing hard time. The offense? Not returning a "House of Flying Daggers" DVD to his local library. Come on, Colorado. You're better than that.

Apparently young Aaron Henson, an impressionable lad all of 19 years old, fell in with the wrong DVD-borrowing crowd sometime last year. Henson packed up the flick for a move, forgot that he had it, and ended up with a warrant for his arrest:

The city said it sent an overdue notice and bill, neither of which were returned.

The city then sent a summons, which was returned.

Then, the city sent a new court date order, it was not returned. And when Aaron failed to appear for the second court date, the city issued a warrant.

Why all the fuss? Because apparently the municipality of Littleton, CO values the DVD of a 2004 release at $31.45, and any "theft" over $30 gets prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Also of note: Littleton, CO has apparently never heard of Amazon.

Anyhow, the whole mess get straightened out after Henson's family forked over a $200 fine for the DVD, $200 to remove the car from the impound lot, and $60 in court fees. And while Littleton has acknowledged its mistake and the mayor swears it won't happen again, the arrest is still on Aaron's record.

Just so long as no one got hurt, I suppose, except for the integrity of our judicial system. [The Denver Channel via Consumerist]

Sony Fusion Table Slides Open To Reveal Workstation

Sony Fusion Table Slides Open To Reveal Workstation

As computers continue to work their way into every aspect of out lives, it’s not surprising to see someone try to integrate a computer into the humble coffee table, albeit it looks different from Microsoft Surface. This concept is dubbed the Sony Fusion, and aims to fuse both technology and furniture. At a glance, it’s just a sleek coffee table, but push a button, and the table will slide open to reveal a workstation with a touch sensitive keyboard, and adjustable screen. The LED outlined keyboard and DVD drive on the side of the table also do their part to make this design look classy. After it goes into production, it will be available in three different colors (blue, white and red), and will set you back $3,000.

ASUS’ EeeBox EB1501U packs ION and USB 3.0, need we say more?

Sure NVIDIA's Ion 2 is all the rage right now, but ASUS still has a few tricks left in store for the progenitor nettop GPU. The EeeBox EB1501U sports a typical nettop processor -- in this case, the older Diamondville Intel Atom 330 dual core -- with Ion One, and as an added bonus, there's USB 3.0 support. Also under the hood? A 2.5-inch, 320GB HDD, DVD drive, and 802.11b/g/n WiFi. As for the other home theater PC box, the EeeMedia EM0501 isn't quite as exciting -- just a 800MHz Samsung ARM processor, a variety of codec supports, and HDMI out. Still, given history, it's a pretty solid addition. Pricing and availability? Your guess is as good as ours for now. Enjoy the pictures for the time being.

Giada Cube N7DT nettop

Giada Cube N7DT nettop

Giada introduces a new nettop to the masses with the Cube N7DT where it packs in virtually everything you need for a media center, although there is no sight of an HD audio output, we're pretty sure that that will be included in the final package. Among the other specifications and features available on the Giada Cube N7DT are an Intel Atom D510 1.66GHz, NVIDIA's next generation Ion chipset, a maximum of 2GB RAM, a 2.5" hard drive bay, a DVD burner, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, LAN support, HDMI, DVI and SPDIF out as well as a TV tuner. No idea on pricing or availability though.

RealNetworks settles RealDVD case, drops product, pays $4.5m

Logo Real
A follow up... RealNetworks settles RealDVD case, drops product, pays $4.5m...

RealNetworks says it has settled the litigation over RealDVD, its software for making copies of DVDs on PC hard drives, agreeing to a permanent injunction against sales of the product and paying $4.5 million in legal costs and other fees to six major Hollywood studios and others that challenged the technology.

Here's our previous post from 2008....

Dsc07828
RealDVD is being touted as one of the only legal ways to "back up" DVDs. It seems to make a copy on your drive, keeps the DRM and adds more Real player style DRM. Here's the funny part about all this - awhile back (1999) a ton of people were sued and got in trouble for trying to back up their DVDs, it still happens to this day although rare. That said you can't build a DVD jukebox without getting sued. Most people nowadays rip DVDs using many of the free open source tools (lots of posts on MAKE about that). Back to 1999, when the encryption(s) on the DVDs were broken allowing copies to be made (DeCSS) - they key actually came from the XingDVD player, from Xing Technologies, a subsidiary of RealNetworks. I'm pretty sure to this day 2600 magazine cannot even link to the DeCSS program, source, or anything. I'm sticking with HandBrake.

Looks like I'm still sticking with handbrake... Makers, what do you use to rip DVDs? Or are you busy making things instead of archiving movies? :)
