Dell has those living in Asia in their sights with four LED monitors primed to hit the market - we're talking about the 23-inch ST23220L which comes with LED backlighting, 1080p resolution. 5ms response time and a 250-nit brightness. Since this is an anti-glare panel, your eyes won't suffer from fatigue even after looking at it for long hours (and from various angles, we might add). As for the 21.5-inch ST2220L, it will feature VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs, while the similarly sized ST2220M will lack HDMI connectivity, but otherwise in all essence is an identical twin as the ST2220L. If your budget is at the most basic level, then the low-end 20-inch IN2020M ought to do the trick without looking tacky - after all, it comes with a high-gloss slim black bezel, HDCP-compliant DVI input, VGA connector, an 8,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, a 1600 x 900 resolution, 5ms response time and a tilt-adjustable stand. Bear in mind that all four monitors are Energy Star 5.0 compliant, so to a certain extent it ought to give you peace of mind that your purchase isn't a power guzzler. No idea on pricing or whether they will hit Stateside or not.

Among all major electronics manufacturers, Sony is betting especially high on 3D. And the two main areas for the future 3D-fication of the company are TVs and computers, it seems. Big S yesterday announced in Tokyo that by the end of 2011, almost all of their TVs sized 40 inches and larger will be 3D-enabled.

At the moment, just 50% of the eight newer Sony models in question (in Japan) feature 3D. But Sony says only a few of their TVs (those with a low price tag) won’t get 3D in the future. In Japan, the company expects 1 million 3D TVs to be sold until 2011, and it wants to capture 50% of that market.

What’s interesting is that even though Sony already churned out a ton of 3D-enabled products, the company has been relatively quiet on the 3D computer front so far. NEC, Fujitsu and Toshiba, on the other hand, already have those devices in their line-up.

But you can now expect a new Vaio notebook with 3D capability, LED backlighting and a full HD display to launch next spring (in Japan first). Sony didn’t reveal more details but showed a prototype Vaio (pictured above) with said features, a 16-inch display and a 3D Blu-ray drive.

The latest study shows that consumers are increasingly choosing 15-inch notebooks, which carries with it more bulk and weight than smaller 13- or 14-inch rivals and at a cost to battery life, with the average 15-inch system getting about 225 minutes of runtime compared to 338 for ultraportable 13-inch systems. The impact of this is that manufacturers may exit the ultraportable market in the U.S. MSI will no longer offer their 13-inch X360 notebook and Lenovo will no longer make their 13-inch ThinkPad X300 series offering.

So who's to blame for this trend? Consumers, manufacturers, and panel makers are to blame according to LaptopMag. Panel makers exert a lot of control over purchase decisions as they price their 15-inch panels more aggressively. As such, we see deeper discounts on 15-inch systems from manufacturers, which are driving consumer purchases in that class. Also, users who switch from a desktop to a laptop environment may not understand portability and may opt for the larger displays to replicate a desktop system. Another force behind the 15-inch momentum is that consumers see 11-inch and 13-inch system with ultra low-voltage systems whereas 14-inch and 15-inch systems come equipped with more powerful CPUs and GPUs.

We just got off the phone with Quo Computers founder Rashantha De Silva. Remember him? Last spring, amidst all the hoopla surrounding Psystar and Apple, he announced the opening of a walk-in Mac clone shop in The Golden State. Since then, Psystar may have bitten the dust, but it looks like De Silva and co. are still in business... for now, anyway. Their newest (they haven't even had time to update the website), the Quo maxQ2, will feature an Intel Core i7 3.6GHz CPU, 12GB of RAM, a 240GB SSD, a 1TB HDD, and an Adobe Mercury Playback Engine-compatible NVIDIA 285 GTX GPU. In addition, this bad boy will come equipped with an Asetek liquid / copper cold plate cooling system, and believe it or not, it'll run OS X, Linux and Windows 7. Prices start at $3,765, and it should go on sale starting September 15. For about 18 minutes, or an hour and 18 minutes if Apple's lawyer crew just so happens to be at lunch.

[Thanks, John Mayer (really!)]
