HP 12C financial calculator emulated, runs on webOS

HP 12C financial calculator emulated, runs on webOS

The webOS platform is not quite dead yet, and is pretty capable if placed in the right hands. We're talking about the HP 12c financial calculator being emulated on webOS, thanks to the magic of Javascript emulation. While this is not the full application, it will still let you perform all the relevant calculations that you've ever wanted to do with this classic. The program is known as Calc12c, where it will support both the Pre and the Pixi, delivering haptic feedback for each press of the on-screen button. This is definitely the more economical way of going around things since a physical 12c will cost you around $70.

Asus Eee PC 1001PQ has unusual lid design

Asus Eee PC 1001PQ has unusual lid design

The Asus Eee PC 1001PQ has pretty much standard specifications where a netbook is concerned, featuring staples like an Intel Atom N450 1.66GHZ processor, a 10.1" display at 1024 x 600 resolution, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity as well as a choice between a 3- or 6-cell battery. What makes it stand out from the crowd would be its rather different netbook lid design, coming in either “Flame Purple” or Vibrant Gold” (as seen above) colors. Not only that, you will also find a set of stickers for you to customize the lid design according to your preference. Pre-adolescents are the target market crowd for the 1001PQ, although we're quite sure some of you out there won't mind toting one of these puppies around. Small kids should be using the family computer so that parents can supervise just which sites they're visiting instead of having a netbook they call their own.

New ATM Hack Turns Cash Machines Into Jackpots

Jackpotting ATMThe ubiquitous ATM has quickly become a favorite, and often easy, target for hackers looking to make a quick buck. At the Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas, security researcher Barnaby Jack recently demonstrated a pair of hacks that allowed him to force an ATM to literally spit cash at him like he'd hit the jackpot on a slot machine. In the demonstration, Jack attacked ATMs from Triton and Tranax, but he said that he had successfully tried the methods on two other brands of machines, as well.

The first attack involved accessing a Tranax model over a network (although it could also theoretically be done on the Internet via dial-up) and bypassing the ATM's authentication systems. Once inside, Jack installed malware that can either collect account numbers and PINs, or simply force the machine to spit out cash with a specially coded card. For his follow-up act, Jack opened the front of a Triton machine, inserted a USB drive loaded with similar malware, and watched as it automatically infected the ATM. The attack on the Triton is particularly unnerving, since it demonstrates that many ATMs use the same key to unlock the access panel (much like filing cabinets). That key can easily be purchased on the Internet for around $10.

eReader price war reaches $99 level

eReader price war reaches $99 level

"Good Enough": those two words terrorize every technology companies in the world. It usually means falling margins, but also the possible mass adoption of a class of products. Copia (a DMC Worldwide company) is readying a $99 5" eReader that will compete with the Kindle, Nook and other (bigger, in size) electronic readers. With this pricing, they've reached a new (low) level in the eReader price war.

In addition of the hardware itself, Copia is trying to differentiate itself via its platform, which relies heavily on a social aspect: users can access their Twitter and Facebook feeds, and also share their thoughts on those social networks, without having to use the websites.

In short, we've pretty much reached the point where the technology behind eReader (display, processors, OS) is "good enough", so expect equipment makers to fight on prices (devices+books), platform and possibly on differentiators like social networking (but that's easy to do/reproduce). The iPad pretty much puts a ceiling on eReaders prices and we're currently looking for a bottom. Expect the average price to continue falling. Head to Copia, or read more eBook stories.

100 million Facebook users’ details collected and published

100 million Facebook users' details collected and published

Are you a Facebook user? If so, then you probably have a 20% chance of being victim of the latest fiasco, where a cool 100 million Facebook user details (out of 500 million) were collected and published for all and sundry to see by a security consultant. According to Ron Bowles, he used a piece of code to scan Facebook profiles, and went ahead to collect data which was not hidden by the user's privacy settings. The list has been made available to the masses as a downloadable file, where it also holds the URL of every searchable Facebook user's profile, their name and unique ID. Needless to say, this file has spread like wildfire across the Internet, being downloaded over a thousand times on the Pirate Bay. Facebook isn't too peturbed by this as they issued a statement saying the information in the list was already freely available online, and no private data is available or has been compromised.
